There are so many mysterious details surrounding YUREI DECO that spur more and more questions about what the series might contain. The show launched its official website on March 2022, and on it is everything from merchandise to deep cuts about YUREI DECO lore. The show is oozing with potential and rewards fans who do their own detective work.

YUREI DECO is centered around a group called the Yurei Detective Club, whose members are trying to solve the mystery of the Zero Phenomenon. Starting at the beginning, Tom Sawyer Island is the island where the events of the show take place, and where residents are required to wear virtual and augmented reality headsets that transport them into the world of Deco. Deco is a version of the world that shows people only what they want to see.

Love, a form of currency, is awarded to residents that perform acts deemed good by their peers (think likes on Instagram), and the more love a person gets the more special treatment society gives them. The Zero Phenomenon happens when people wander through a dead zone. It causes the person to lose all of their love and their connection with Deco. Whether the Yurei Detective Club can solve the mystery of the Zero Phenomenon, and how the Zero Phenomenon is related to other mysteries on Tom Sawyer Island will both drive the plot.

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a book following the events of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In the books, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are the town troublemakers, with Tom being the leader and Huck being a member of the “robber’s gang.” At the beginning of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck leaves town in order to escape being beaten by his abusive father, and teams up with a runaway slave named Jim in order to do so. The book deals with topics of abuse, race, and slavery. It is still unclear how the series will incorporate Huckleberry Finn’s plot and its more difficult subjects into its narrative.

It would be dishonest for YUREI DECO to only reference the works of Mark Twain on a surface level when it claims to have a direct connection to his works. There are very few anime that confront issues of racism directly, but YUREI DECO should tackle those issues if it is really based on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The writers of YUREI DECO have the skills to tackle dense issues fearlessly, and hopefully, it will elevate the story of Huckleberry Finn with grace. However, if the writers avoid or ignore the issues that made The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn such a compelling story then the series would lose a lot of its credibility.

YUREI DECO has not even been released yet, so as of writing this article there is little information to judge the show’s quality. It is exciting to see cultural cross pollination between Japan and the United States. Now the old works of Mark Twain could reach a whole new audience. Huckleberry Finn is a story with great potential for the enhancement of modern storytelling, and the release of YUREI DECO this fourth of July weekend is sure to be an exciting event.

YUREI DECO is set to premiere on July 3, 2022.
