Bhambri won only his second ever ATP level match with an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over world no. 101 Karol Beck in 79 minutes. The 29 year old Slovak has been ranked as high as no. 36 in the world a few years ago but was completely outclassed by the 19 year old Indian, who is ranked 345 in the world.

Bhambri broke three times in the first set to and twice in the second, losing his own serve twice in the encounter. The Indian created 13 break point opportunities for himself, converting 5 of them.

Bhambri next faces top seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic who received a bye into the second round. The win guaranteed him 20 ATP ranking points, which will take him to around 300 in the rankings, a new career high for the 19 year old.

Meanwhile, at the WTA ASB Classic in Auckland, Sania Mirza and Russian partner Elena Vesnina, seeded second in the doubles draw, scored a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rebecca Marino and Marina Erakovic. This is Sania’s first event since the US Open. The Indian lost in the qualifying draw of the singles.
