Instead of barking, whining, or nuzzling the owner, the dog issued a casual glance at its leash, over and over again. The sweet side eye caught the attention of commenters who claimed this way of communicating may not be as unusual as you think.

At the time of publication, the video had nearly 10,000 upvotes on the r/aww thread. Comments praised the cuteness while diving into personal experiences with pup-to-owner communication.

“Dogs are one of the very few animals that can understand not just regular pointing, but pointing with your eyes. In fact, pointing with your eyes as a method of communication is probably why humans have visible sclera (eye whites) in the first place,” wrote u/Blewbe.

The user continued to applaud this particular dog’s skills. “This doggo is a very, very intelligent pupper for being able to not just recognize, but replicate this behaviour effectively. 10/10, should definitely take for all the walkies.”

And u/Blewbe is right. According to Wag!, dogs truly do understand when a human points, or uses their eyes to send a message. “Basically, they follow the point, and their owner’s eyes, while they pick up on the tone of voice. A stern voice sending them out or a voice encouraging them to come inside is part of the communication,” Wag! Wrote.

The explanation continued: “The pointing draws attention to the idea that something is going on. Then your voice, together with the point, brings you and your dog into a shared attention state.”

So it seems this dog, in particular, has mastered the form of communication dogs have inherently come to understand.

Other Reddit posters had similar experiences with their own dogs. U/Sir_Nicholas_ explained their dog has a similar tactic to begging for treats. “When my dog doesn’t want to do a trick without a treat he will go to the box with all the treats and all dog stuff. And slowly hint to the box with his eyes. He’s a smart dumb dog and I love him,” they wrote.

While most seemed to love the dog’s determination, others weren’t so sure they liked the idea of a dog with such human behaviors. “This is hilarious and scary at the same time for me,” wrote u/litchikimchi. Their point was echoed by a few other commenters, who all claimed the human-like movements didn’t feel like something a dog should be able to recreate.

Regardless of your personal opinions surrounding the communication method, we know one thing. This pup is certainly a very good boy.
